our current tree planting project

Little River, Canterbury

More than 400 native trees have now taken root by the Christchurch to Little River Rail Trail in Canterbury. In spring 2023, we worked with High Bare Peak landowners and a team of planters to plant your locally sourced seedlings. To suit the damper environment of the site, we planted:

  • Pōkākā

  • Māhoe

  • Ribbonwood

  • Cabbage trees

  • Kōwhai

  • Whauwhaupaku (Fivefinger)

  • Kānuka.

We have plenty more room on this site, so future Gift a Tree purchases will also be planted here.

GIFT A TREE faqS

Something doesn’t make sense? Got more questions? Here’s a bunch of frequently asked questions - if you can’t find the answer you’re looking for then drop us a note and we’ll come right back to you.

  • We’re a team of like-minded and purpose-driven individuals doing our bit to help solve climate change. Our aim is to enhance and grow native forest in Aotearoa New Zealand by creating connections and opportunities for individuals and businesses to regenerate land and offset their carbon.

  • Gift a tree is a service by us - Forever Forests, where you can purchase a gift certificate for your chosen number of native trees to be planted. Following your purchase, native tree seedling(s) are then purchased and planted at one of our Forever Forests reforestation projects in New Zealand.

  • If you’ve opted to add in your recipient’s email address and a personalised message, we’ll send your giftee an email with your message and a gift certificate attachment within 48 hours of your purchase.

If you haven’t added your recipient’s email address and a personalised message, you will need to send the gift certificate to them yourself, which is emailed to you directly after your payment has been confirmed.

  • Trees breathe in carbon and breathe out oxygen, so an easy way to get more carbon out of the air is to plant more trees so they can breathe it in. More carbon in the air than our planet can handle means climate change and global warming will become irreversible, so we need to act now.

Planting more native trees in New Zealand means not only are we contributing to the effects of climate change, we are also cleaning our waterways, creating more biodiversity and habitats for our unique wildlife to thrive, and also some green space for future generations to enjoy.

If, like us, you’d like to listen to the dulcet tones of David Attenborough all day long while learning more about the effects of climate change and how we can take action, then check out his docufilm “A Life on Our Planet” on Netflix.

  • Your gifted native tree species are chosen based on site-specific characteristics, with an emphasis on achieving successful establishment. We focus on using eco-sourced seedlings to make sure the chosen native tree is suited to local environmental conditions. To protect this delicate seedling from any harm, weed mats and pest control guards are placed around the native tree.

  • Native forest is vegetation that is native, the real OG, to New Zealand. Vegetation that was here long before settlers came along. Exotic forests are tree species that aren’t originally from New Zealand and were brought over and grown here. For example, pine trees are exotic and the beloved silver fern or ponga is native.

  • Planting native over exotic trees means these will attract more native animal species, provide a habitat, shelter and food, promote biodiversity and create a healthier natural environment. And being native means they are specifically evolved and catered to the unique New Zealand environment, and the infamous four seasons in a day climate!

  • Your native tree seedling won’t be planted right away as the conditions need to be right. The best time of year to plant, making sure your seedling has the best possible success rate, is generally late autumn through to spring.

Currently, we’re planting all purchased seedlings at our project in Little River, Canterbury with landowners High Bare Peak. View this recent video we made of our first round of tree planting.

  • While getting any native tree back in the ground in New Zealand is amazing, we hope you’ll pick us!

We’ll be planting all purchased gift certificate seedlings at one of our Forever Forests projects, which are all in New Zealand. These projects are all converted farmland, turned back into protected native forests. They’re forests that’ll be there forever, and not harvested for profit.

Returning some farmland to nature has massive ecological benefits for everyone, including the farmer.
