FAQs
Ekos Forever Forests: What’s Changed?
Forever Forests and Ekos’s forestry team have merged to form Ekos Forever Forests. Here’s what that means for you.
-
Forever Forests and Ekos’s forestry team have merged to form Ekos Forever Forests. Same people, same relationships — now backed by combined expertise across native reforestation, carbon markets, biodiversity credits, and certification.
-
Yes, your project continues exactly as it is. Your contact, your agreement, your relationship — all unchanged. The only difference is you now sit behind a bigger, more capable team.
-
You now have access to more revenue streams, including biodiversity credits, alongside the support you already have. Same hands-on relationship, more ways for your land to earn.
-
This is an evolution, not a disruption. Forever Forests and Ekos’s forestry team were already working toward the same goal — protecting native forests and scaling verified carbon removal. Bringing the two together under one name reflects that we’re now one team, with one shared mission.
Everything Else
-
We’re a team of like-minded, purpose-driven individuals working to help solve climate change. As Ekos Forever Forests, our aim is to protect and grow native forest across Aotearoa New Zealand, connecting landowners and businesses with the opportunities to regenerate land and offset their carbon.
-
Don’t worry! If you’re not sure what your carbon emissions are or if you don’t know how much or how little to contribute, or you’d like to talk to us about native-only forests, we can help! Let’s chat.
-
Trees are eligible for the ETS if they are on post-1989 land and meet the following definitions:
Minimum area - 1 hectare
Minimum average width - 30 metres
Minimum canopy cover - 30% per hectare at maturity
If you’re not sure if your forest meets these requirements, give us a bell and we’ll be able to help you find out if you’re eligible.
-
No, Ekos Forever Forests are protected from harvesting. Just like our name suggests, our aim is to create permanent, forever forests.
-
Once we’ve registered you with the ETS, you can voluntarily claim credits every year between January and June for the previous year. This is called a Voluntary Emissions return - we can help you with this!
-
Ekos Forever Forests markets your premium New Zealand native carbon credits directly to emitters and offsetters, achieving a price premium for local, high-quality projects like yours.
-
From 1 January 2023, the Crown provides Adverse Event Cover. If all or part of a registered post-1989 forest is cleared by a temporary adverse event, such as a fire, the landowner can apply for an exemption from emissions liabilities. Under this exemption, the affected part of your forest won't earn any more units until it returns to the carbon stock level it was at before the adverse event.
-
The status of the land as at 31 December 1989 determines whether any forest on that land can earn carbon credits.
There are two types of land as far as the ETS is concerned: pre-1990 land and post-1989 land.
Not sure which your land falls under? We can help you find out which yours is, and guide you through the registration process and ongoing management.

The warm fuzzies, peace of mind and a big pat on the back! You’ll also be rewarded financially so that your bottom line doesn’t suffer.
It’s not just all about feeling good and having cash in your bank account though – it’s also about restoring our land, cleaning our waterways, getting more carbon out of the sky so we can breathe in cleaner air and most importantly, slow down the effects of climate change. We don’t want to get too dramatic here but, if we don’t slow climate change, we’ll slip over the point of no return for our planet and our children, and our children’s children, won’t have everything we love about this place we call home.
If you have a question that isn’t covered here, please get in touch and we’ll respond as soon as possible.
Reforestation Projects Across New Zealand
Supporting only the highest-quality native forest regeneration projects across New Zealand. These projects make huge improvements to the health of the land and have a real impact in slowing climate change. Projects are registered under the Emissions Trading Scheme, restore native forest, and each credit represents one government-verified tonne of CO2.
