Something doesn’t make sense? Got more questions? Here’s a bunch of frequently asked questions - if you can’t find the answer you’re looking for then drop us a note and we’ll come right back to you.

  • We’re a team of like-minded and purpose-driven individuals doing our bit to help solve climate change. Our aim is to enhance and grow native forest in Aotearoa New Zealand by creating connections and opportunities for individuals and businesses to regenerate land and offset their carbon.

  • Don’t worry! If you’re not sure where to start or what to do, or you’d like to talk to us about your land and options for the future, we can help! Let’s chat.

  • Trees are eligible for the ETS if they are on post-1989 land and meet the following definitions:

    • Minimum area - 1 hectare

    • Minimum average width - 30 metres

    • Minimum canopy cover - 30% per hectare at maturity

If you’re not sure if your forest meets these requirements, give us a bell and we’ll be able to help you find out if you’re eligible.

  • No, Forever Forests are protected from harvesting. Just like our name, our aim to to create permanent, forever forests.

  • Once we’ve registered you with the ETS, you can voluntarily claim credits every year between January and June for the previous year. This is called a Voluntary Emissions return - we can help you with this!

  • Forever Forests markets your premium New Zealand native carbon credits directly to emitters and offsetters - achieving a price premium for local, high-quality projects like yours.

  • From 1 January 2023 the Crown will provide Adverse Event Cover.

If all or part of a registered post-1989 forest is cleared by a temporary adverse event such as a fire, the landowner will be able to apply for an exemption from emissions liabilities. Under this exemption, the affected part of your forest will not earn any more units until it reaches the carbon stock it was at before the adverse event.

  • The status of the land as at 31 December 1989 determines whether any forest on that land can earn carbon credits.

There are two types of land as far as the ETS is concerned – pre-1990 land and post-1989 land.

Not sure which your land falls under? We can help you find out which yours is and take you through the registration process and ongoing management.

  • The warm fuzzies, peace of mind and a big pat on the back! You’ll also be rewarded financially so that your bottom line doesn’t suffer.

It’s not just all about feeling good and having cash in your bank account though – it’s also about restoring our land, cleaning our waterways, getting more carbon out of the sky so we can breathe in cleaner air and most importantly, slow down the effects of climate change. We don’t want to get too dramatic here but, if we don’t slow climate change, we’ll slip over the point of no return for our planet and our children, and our children’s children, won’t have everything we love about this place we call home.
